The School Health Services Department consists of two certified school nurses, and two Licensend Practial Nurses (LPN). Additionally there are two LPN's assigned to specific classrooms for medical necessity.

The nurses provide comprehensive care and services for our students.  They create and interpret health care plans for students with special health care needs. They provide and document assessment, diagnosis, treatment and evaluation.

In addition to mandated screenings, first aid and nursing services as outlined by state guidelines, the certified school nurses are members of the Student Assistance Team (SAP), the Safey Committe,  and attend IEP and 504 team meetings.  The nurses are responsible for inservicing the staff on health-related topics.

If you have questions or feel you could use the assistance of a school nurse please contact one of them.

When to Keep your Child Home from School

Upon occasion, it is necessary for your child to remain at home due to an illness or injury.  The following guidelines should be followed to determine whether to keep your child home:

  • Your child should not be sent to school hoping that he or she will be better after arriving.
  • Your child should be kept home following a nighttime bout of vomiting or diarrhea to watch for further symptoms. Must tolerate a light diet before returning.
  • Your child should remain home if he or she has a temperature of 100 degrees or higher. A child should not return to school until they have had a normal temperature for 24 hours without any fever reducing medications.
  • Excessive coughing or nasal discharge.

Parents often ask about sending their children to school with a communicable disease.  The PA Department of Health offers the following guidelines and exclusion periods:

  • Pink Eye - until therapy is initiated as directed by a physician.  Eyes should be free from discharge prior to returning.
  • Strep Throat - 24 hours after start of treatment
  • Scarlet Fever - 24 hours after start of treatment
  • Lice - after being treated the student must be checked by the school nurse.  Parents/Guardian should accompany students to the nurse’s office.  Students must be free of live lice and have a reduced number of nits.
  • For other conditions such as chicken pox, etc, please contact your school nurse.
